Radio controlled model aircraft, like model airplanes, helicopters, blimps and hot air balloons are able to conduct low altitude aerial photography at reasonable prices.

Unlike their full sized versions, RC aerial photography can get into regions that are normally restricted. This allows them to provide valuable aerial photos of residential, commercial areas and other populated areas off limits to manned aircraft.

Compared to their larger cousins, RC aircraft restrictions include limits on overall altitude, payload abilities and shorter flight times.

Common Sense RC photography practices

Although it is said that public space viewing is legal, it would be prudent to avoid flying over property or people with remote control model aircraft.

Once you are fully aware of all local FAA and other aerial rules, ensure that you are airworthy aircraft remains within view at all times.

Your aircraft should be small enough to land in the designated area but large enough to be seen. Adding appropriate markings and color usage will facilitate its visibility. Your model aircraft should also be able to handle all load factors while in operation.

It should go without saying that operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a sure way to lose your privileges. And speaking of privileges, you must yield to full-sized manned aircraft.

Remote Controlled Photography Safety tips

As an experienced RC model operator, you should make certain that you are familiar with all precautionary pre-flight, systems checks, take off, flight and landing procedures. These will help you identify and avoid any problems before they occur.

Aside from knowing the terrain and the aerial hazards that you will be operating in, having another person with you will help you avoid potential unseen hazards. Your spotter can also make recommendations for your aerial photographs while ensuring that you are not distracted by any spectators.
