Basketball Photography

The great thing about basketball photography is the limited play area. Most of the action will be heading towards the nets so you can position yourself accordingly. Like any sporting event, you must understand the game in order to anticipate the moves.

Being close to the players will also provide you with tightly framed photos of the basketball players and their facial expressions.

Camera settings

If you are using a digital camera, you will be able to experiment and get immediate feedback as you shoot. You might consider leaving the flash in your camera bag so as not to disturb the basketball players. But as a guest, it is best to ask the coaches for their take on your approach to basketball photography.

If you are allowed to use your flash, you should consider turning down its power to minimize any player interferences. With the existing ambient light and the right settings, you are basketball photographs should turn out natural.

Your aperture will need to be F5.6 or larger for the indoor lighting applications. To freeze the action, consider using shutter speeds of at least ISO 800 or higher.

Positioning yourself in various areas around the basketball court will allow you to take full advantage of your digital cameras abilities and overcome some of its limitations. If your digital camera does not have an extremely fast auto focus, you could set yourself up for a zone focus then wait for the players to come to you.

Shooting indoors with higher shutter speeds may result in some noise. So you may have to do a little repair work with software tools such as Adobe Photoshop and or Noise Ninja to sharpen your images.

Of course, you can always rejoice with plenty of light when shooting baseball photography. No matter the event, once you are hooked on sports photography, you will learn to adapt whether you are capturing images indoors or out.
