Summer time fun can include capturing baseball pictures of your favorite team or simply building photographic experience at a local little league game.
In order to capture that prize winning baseball photo, there are a few things you will need to know about baseball photography before heading out.
First off, when in play, baseball is a fast game that requires every baseball photographer to be on their toes. If you are not attentive and anticipating the next move, you will likely never get any great baseball pictures.
Baseball action photos that are crisp and focused on a players facial expression, is a result of a photographers clear understanding of the game of baseball.
Baseball game photography tips
Providing you are allowed to shoot at a baseball game, why not get there early. Become familiar with the grounds, take some pictures of the playing field and other areas like the bleachers, batting cage, dug out and so on. Look for different vantage points and learn the best routes to these locations.
Check that your digital camera, lenses and other camera equipment are all in working order. Naturally, your cameras batteries should be fully charged and a few sets of new batteries in your camera bag are good insurance.
Taking lots of awesome baseball game pictures also means having sufficient digital camera memory on hand. It is best to have 2 or 3 smaller memory cards than one large memory card. Having several memory cards moreover allows you to segment your shooting activity.
Baseball photo settings
You will need a faster shutter speed to capture that highly coveted baseball photography image. If you are using a digital SLR camera, then you will likely be able to select a setting that matches the conditions of the day.
You can do test shots in shutter priority, while changing the aperture, or try aperture priority while varying the shutter speed. Your choice of settings will depend on your subjects speed and the ambient light.
Some cameras will allow you to take black and white baseball photos. These can be a nice touch, especially when shooting baseball portraits that may at times, resemble old fashion baseball pictures or major league baseball player pictures.
Several of the techniques that you will learn with baseball photography will carry over to football photography.
