Timing in football photography is the key to capturing great football pictures. Understanding the fundamentals of how the game of football is played will help you improve your timing.

It’s not necessary to go out and shoot as many football pics as possible hoping that at least one of them will be a winner. But if you’re using a digital camera, you could take more football pictures than normal, then during quite times, delete those football images that did not turn out.

You could try different techniques throughout the game to see what works best for you. For instance, you could follow an individual football player and end up capturing that football photograph that really stands out.

Pictures of a football

Don’t forget to take pictures of a football field, pictures of a football, pictures of the fans and other similar game day ideas. These football images will round out the mood of the day’s events and would make a great addition to a football album.

If you’re shooting kids football photos or youth football photography, you would do well to capture the expressions on the parent’s faces. High school football photography is another such venue that with the right authorization, you might capture football images not available from the stands.

Remember to focus your camera lens to both sides of the field, meaning to look at both the winning and the losing sides. There equal amounts of emotion stemming from the anguish of defeat as well as the jubilation of winning.

Night football photography

Whether you’re trying to take a football stadium picture or a football photo at night, you’ll need to consider a whole new approach over daytime shooting.

Using a flash will not necessarily help you out a whole lot, but using a faster 2.8 lens will contribute significantly to your goal. With a high ISO setting, wide open aperture and a reasonable shutter speed, you can capture good football pictures.

If you do notice some noise, you may want to open your digital camera software to fine tune your photos. Unlike golf photography, which is strictly a day event, night football photography demands special techniques and skills.
