Family Photo Tips

Whether your family is just beginning or you belong to a large brood, great family photos are cherished for generations to come.

Unfortunately, not all family photos we snap at home come out that great. Here are a few easy family photo tips to help your family pictures come out better.

Always use a Tripod

The first family photo tip is to buy and use a tripod. Balancing your camera on a low coffee table or very high shelf will never get you the right angle for all different sizes of your family members.

Family photos need to have the focus elements in the center with equal amounts of background space all around. Once your camera is steady and stationed on a tripod, you can zoom in or out before asking everyone to say cheese.

Tell them you are adjusting the cameras settings, but quietly take a few pictures without getting everyone formally ready. The natural pose may come out better without capturing fake toothy smiles or serious looks.

Take It Outside

If you are getting together in pleasant weather for a backyard BBQ or a summer beach reunion, take it outside.

Why bother taking family photos in a overcrowded living room, with furniture, art, toys and other stuff lying around that will clutter most any photo by distracting the eye.

Instead take advantage of natural light by getting everybody outdoors and using the surroundings as a backdrop for your family photo. The green trees and the lush lawn will bring your pictures to life.

There are never too many pictures

The next family photo tip is to make sure you take as many pictures as possible. Until your subjects can exhibit the patience of sitting or standing around, just click away like a professional photographer would do.

You never see models getting dressed up and then the photographer taking just one picture. It is an entire days event in the same clothes and props, because they have to get it right. While you are not under similar pressure, take as many pictures as you like. You are bound to get a few really great family photos.

Forget about the pose

The last family photo tip is to stop taking those silly photos where you get everyone in the family to pose. If your family makes awkward and strained faces when posing for family photos, ditch the whole idea.

Designate a friend to take some picture as the day progresses when people are laughing, eating, talking and playing. You may not get everybody looking at the camera at the same time, but you might get some pretty neat shots.

If you use all these family photo tips, you will be sure to create some great family photo memories that will eventually serve your descendants well as genealogy photography.
