Preserving Family Photography

You may have inherited lots of family pictures, dug them up in your parents attic or collected them over the years. Regardless of how they were collected, preserving family photography is very important if you want the stories you tell your children and grandchildren to come to life.

Grand tales of when your grandfather was in the navy or when your mother was born make more sense and seem more tangible when everyone can see family pictures with the story.

Organize your family images

You can organize family pictures chronologically, that is as events occurred or individually, as focused on a particular member at a time. You can collect all of grandma’s pictures and put them together and label them accordingly before you proceed.

Identify and label your family photos

The best way to organize and preserve family photography is to get acid and lignin free photo boxes or albums and store the pictures in them.

Identify and label family pictures with acid free markers to prevent fading or any other type of discoloration. Never use any old album or scrapbook for preserving family photographs especially if they include older black and white family pictures.

Many cheaper, low-quality albums have acid in the paper which is disastrous for your photos.

Prevent family photo losses

When preserving family photography, it may not be feasible to have a huge pile of albums in a safe, but you can choose some priceless family portraits and some very special occasions and turn them into one special photo album.

You can keep that album in a fire proof box to prevent any thing from happening to it. Another idea could be to make high quality copies of the pictures or send them for restoration to photo stores. You can then pass out copies to close family members or make it part of their gifts when occasions arise.

The restoration service can be a bit steep, but they usually do a very good job in getting the color and condition of your pictures back to its original or close to original condition.

If everybody had copies of some of the favorite family pictures, then you would have back ups in case one person loses it or it gets destroyed in some other way.

Digital media back ups

Another way of preserving family photography is to go the hi-tech way by scanning the pictures and copying them to a DVD.

That way you can email them to one another, store them on your hard drive, have a hard copy as well as upload them to websites for photo gifts and the like. With your eggs spread in so many baskets, it will be very difficult to lose them all.

And if you are doing some baby photography with a digital camera, this would be a great time to get into the habit of preserving your photos on digital media.
