Photographing babies can be the hardest and the easiest thing to do ... all at the same time.
It's the hardest because they are so unpredictable. But it's the easiest because they're not camera shy. Because they're so oblivious to their surroundings, they won't be making silly faces like toddlers or trying really hard to look the part like teenagers.
Find your baby's happy time
It's obvious that the best time to photograph a baby is when he or she is sleeping, but that may not be enough. You may want to capture those big baby eyes and perhaps that initial glimpse of the first tooth.
Try to figure out what part of the day is your baby the happiest?
Is it the first thing in the morning, is it bath time or is it during feeding time?
Once you've established that special time, then have your digital camera ready and just start shooting away. That's the advantage of owning a digital photography camera you can continue to capture images without driving up any large expenses.
It's challenging to photograph a baby because he may be smiling at one moment and throwing a tantrum at the other. It's also difficult because unlike older kids who you can bribe with gifts at the end of a photo session, there is nothing much you can do to get your message across to a baby.
Look for a simple background
Try to keep the background as simple as possible when trying to photograph your baby. Too many colorful toys or very bright cartoon character clothes may shift the focus away from your baby.
Your best to go with a plain background such as the baby sprawled over a favorite solid colored blanket or play mat. You can have one stuffed animal beside him as a prop, but don't go with the entire bunch you received during the baby shower.
Aim for high expectations ... but be reasonable
When you see the picture perfect baby photos in magazines with the perfect kids and the perfect parents, you must understand that it took several hours of professional make up and styling and lots of excellent lighting to look that way.
You might have a stain on one shoulder and socks that don't match, but don't worry, your baby is perfect the way she is.
By being reasonable, without any exaggerated expectations and not comparing your baby photos with the pros, you can make photographing your baby easier.
You do not need the most expensive designer outfit for the perfect picture. The best one might just be the buck naked look with your baby curled up under a small blanket in a fetal position wearing nothing but a hair ribbon. Just like newborn baby photos in the hospital, some times, natural is the best way to go.
