Action Photography

Like any type of photography, action photography is about capturing that special moment. Also referred to as stop action photography, timing is the crucial element.

It can be the moment of jubilation on a runners face as she reaches the final crossing line in a 25 mile marathon. Perhaps it's the moment of pride when a 6 year old boy makes his first ever save as a hockey goalie.

Action photography is truly an exciting assignment, because every moment is both different and challenging to capture properly.

Your principal challenge with action photography is ensuring the crisp focus and alignment of the main subject.

How to take action photographs

There are several key tricks to mastering successful action photography. One of course is to know how your camera works.

Using a shutter speed of 1/250 or higher should be adequate to freeze most actions sequences, but experiment with other settings as well.

Most professional action photographers will set their camera mode to shutter priority, thus locking the in the speed to capture their photos.

Another great tip to action photography is panning or following the subject, staying on or just slightly in front of the movement and watching for the right moment.

With action photography, you must learn to think ahead and to develop a great sense of timing. Of course a little luck never hurts either.

Is action photography your passion?

Action Photography can also include such subset themes as sports photography, aerial photography, cycling photography and dance photography among many others.

Action pictures are also an excellent compliment to both individual and team related photography.

Technique plays a key role in achieving great action photography results. A camera with negligible shutter lag and a fast auto-focus are also very helpful features.

Action photography is an exciting fast paced art form ... just ask any action photographer who's been at it for any length of time.
